PINOT NOIR
Solomon Hills Vineyard
Santa Maria Valley
Bien Nacido Estate

Antonio Galloni -
The 2012 Pinot Noir Solomon Hills Vineyard is superb. Beams of acidity and tannin run through a core of dark red and bluish-hued fruit. Cloves, lavender and violets develop in the glass, adding considerable nuance. The 2012 is bright, focused and impeccably balanced from start to finish.

SYRAH
Santa Maria Valley

Bien Nacido Estate

Antonio Galloni -
The 2012 Syrah Bien Nacido Vineyards is a real stunner. Inky blue and purplish fruit, cloves, lavender, mint and blood orange infuse a core of intense fruit as the 2012 shows off its pedigree. Remarkably vivid and precise, the 2012 boasts exceptional textural finesse in a translucent, weightless style that is intense but never heavy. Striking perfume lingers in the empty glass. A drop of Viognier rounds out the blend.

    CHATEAU MONTELENA
RP - "
I was very impressed with the wines I tasted at Chateau Montelena. Bo Barrett and his team are going for a food-friendly style. They certainly appear to be succeeding in the endeavour. The signature wines are the Chardonnay and the two Cabernet Sauvignons".

 CABERNET SAUVIGNON Estate
 Napa Valley
Chateau Montelena

RP -
Surprisingly lush and charming for a young Montelena, the 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate has a deep ruby/purple colour, with earthy, black cherry and blackcurrants. The wine has very ripe tannins, and is medium to full-bodied with outstanding purity and balance. Most Montelena estate Cabernets have traditionally required patience, but this one is set for drinking now and over the next 20 years.

CABERNET SAUVIGNON
Napa Valley
Chateau Montelena

RP -
A big, mouth filling wine, the 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon, shows the personality of the vintage in its intense fruit. There is plenty of underlying structure in this deep, resonant Cabernet Sauvignon. Mint, flowers and sweet red berries are some of the nuances that are woven into the finish. This is far from an easygoing Napa Cabernet. Although delicious today, it should drink well for a number of years. Another year or so in bottle should help the elements come together even more fully. The 2010 is 93% Cabernet Sauvignon and 7% Merlot.

    PHILIP TOGNI
RP -
This is a breathtaking set of wines from Philip, Birgitta and Lisa Togni. Philip Togni hardly needs an introduction to lovers of fine Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Since his epic 1969 Cabernet Sauvignon at Chappellet, Togni has crafted a series of impeccable, breathtaking wines.

RP - The iconic “mountain man,” Philip Togni has made many great wines that have clearly stood the test of time. The oldest vintages I have in my cellar go back to the mid-eighties, and I always recommend that purchasers of Togni’s wines forget them for at least ten years.

The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate’s dense ruby/purple colour is followed by notes of crème de cassis, liquorice, mulberries and spring flowers. Medium to full-bodied and elegant, it cuts a broad swath between a great Médoc and a Napa Valley Cabernet. There is still some tannin to shed, should be at its peak in 4-5 years, and drink well for 20-25 years.

The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon impresses for its length and total class. Mocha, game, smoke, graphite and plums are all supported by veins of cool, insistent minerality. This isn’t a blockbuster Cabernet, rather it is a wine that impresses for its finesse and precision. Sweet red cherries, mint, pencil shavings and violets are some of the notes that are layered into the super-refined finish. As always, Togni’s Cabernet Sauvignon is distinguished for an extraordinary bouquet that recalls some of the great wines of the Medoc and the structure to age gracefully for years. It will be interesting to see if the 2010 blossoms in bottle. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2040.

CABERNET SAUVIGNON

RP -
The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon is stunningly beautiful and seductive in its red fruit, mint and tobacco. This is a surprisingly accessible vintage for the Cabernet Sauvignon. Today it looks like an excellent choice for readers who want to explore the wines of this iconic producer – as long as it doesn’t close down in bottle. Togni’s 2009 is notable for its exceptional elegance, finesse and pedigree. There is plenty of Spring Mountain structure, but today the 2009 is disarmingly sexy and radiant for such a young wine.

CABERNET SAUVIGNON
Philip Togni

RP -
The 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon, a blend of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, comes from steep mountain vineyards at the top of the Napa side of Spring Mountain. Aromas of black olives, tapenade, crème de cassis, liquorice and truffles emerge from this opaque ruby/purple-coloured, youthful 2004.
Togni’s spiritual reference point is Bordeaux more than Napa Valley, and his wines seem to represent a hypothetical melange of those two distinctive schools of wine. Still backward, but rich, full-bodied and promising, this brilliant 2004 should age for 30-40 years.

CHARDONNAY
Santa Maria Valley
Bien Nacido Estate

Antonio Galloni -
The 2013 Chardonnay Bien Nacido Vineyards emerges from the glass with candied lemon, white flowers, mint and lightly honeyed notes. The 2013 is a bit restrained today, perhaps because of its recent bottling, but all the elements are in the right place. The focused, translucent finish is striking.

Bien Nacido Estate

Antonio Galloni -
The 2013 Chardonnay Solomon Hills boasts superb breadth and intensity, with an element of pure power that is impossible to miss. The flavours are dense, stony and mineral-driven to the core. Today, the 2013 is a baby, but it also offers outstanding potential. I preferred it slightly to the Bien Nacido.

All the best elements of the vintage and house style come together in HdV’s 2009 Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard. The fruit is a bit richer, riper and more voluptuous than in most HdV wines, which serves to balance the cool, vibrant style the estate favours. The 2009 impresses for its length, persistence and spherical finish. This is a great showing from HdV.

CHARDONNAY ESTATE
Mount Eden

RP -
The Mount Eden 2008 Chardonnay Estate is made from the estate’s best barrels, with the aim of producing a wine that can age 20 years. That shouldn’t be a problem for the 2008.
It reveals gorgeous scents of citrus, crushed rocks and smoke, all of which come together nicely in the glass. The 2008 remains a tightly wound, subtle and finessed wine that needs another few years in the cellar, but it is striking even today.
This is all finesse and elegance.
