    LA RIOJA ALTA
“La Rioja Alta was founded in the town of Haro in 1890. They own 450 hectares of vineyard from which their entire portfolio is sourced, predominantly Tempranillo complemented by Graciano, Mazuelo and Garnacha. Another tenet is their use of American rather than French oak. The wood is cured for two years outdoors before being shaped and hammered into barrels at their own cooperage. Quite simply, these are some of the finest Rioja's that can grace your cellar: complex, refined, classic but without compromising fruit intensity and to reiterate: wines that speak about where they come from.” Neal Martin, Wine Advocate #202, Aug 2012

TORRE DE ONA MARTELO
Rioja Reserva
La Rioja Alta

New Wine/Background:

This wine is from a single
2 hectare plot at their Torre de Ona estate in Rioja Alavesa.
La Rioja Alta have dedicated a considerable amount of time and money into perfecting the wine and this is the first vintage of Martelo that they have released.
They have spent 20 years identifying the best parcel of the estate –this is a true labour of love.

It is predominantly Tempranillo with small amounts of Mazuelo, Garnacha and Viura and spends 24 months in 80% American and 20% French oak barrels. It represents a departure to a slightly more modern style for this bastion of traditional winemaking. The results are brilliant and they see this as being one of their prestige wines in years to come.

'GRAN RESERVA 904'
Rioja Gran Reserva
La Rioja Alta

RP/Luiz Gutierrez -
It seems like yesterday when the superb 2001 was released, and now I already have the 2010 Gran Reserva 904 in my glass. It has to be among the greatest modern time vintages of this mythical bottling, where they aim for a wine that has a long aging potential. This is mostly Tempranillo with 10% Graciano and 13.5% alcohol, and it matured in fourth-used American oak barrels for four years, during which time the wine was racked every six months. It has the combination of elegance and power only the best vintages are capable of, with the classical aromas, great detail and nuance, very good balance and persistence. They consider 2010 among the best years of this century, and maybe future generations will talk about 2010 like we talk about the great classical vintages of yesterday today. The palate is polished but shows plenty of energy and tension, the tannins are very fine and elegant, and the flavours are focused and clean. This has to be one of the greatest wines from the vintage. A legend in the making.

Lovely evolution and freshness. Sinewy and like a refreshing poultice on the palate somehow. Camomile aromas and real delicacy. Bravo!

RP -
This is one of the warmest years for Roda, a ripe and heady, hedonistic vintage. What I like about the wine is that it does not display any signs of over ripeness, perhaps because of some cooler days in July that slowed things down. The nose is serious and without excess, with the oak also perfectly integrated into the fruit, which is in the foreground. The palate is also terribly balanced, with very fine tannins. This is very pleasant and tasty. This wine has a profile to be a great commercial success.
