    AALTO
A top Ribera Del Duero domaine, making powerful, well structured, long lasting wines.

RP: Bodegas y Vinedos Aalto is a partnership between legendary vigneron Mariano Garcia and Javier Zaccagnini, former President of the governing body of the Ribera del Duero DO. Aalto is sourced from 7 different villages on a variety of soils with vineyard age ranging from 40-100 years and was aged for 24 months in French and American oak.

'AALTO'
Aalto
Ribera del Duero

RP/Luis Gutierrez -
The 2015 Aalto has contained ripeness for the warm and dry conditions of the year, and I find it surprisingly fresh and balanced. It's still a concentrated wine that is generously oaked, round, lush and with a great combination of power and elegance. Different plots are fermented and aged separately, some in new barrels and others in used ones. It's very approachable and ready. Really impressive in its style. One of the finest vintages of Aalto in recent times.

'AALTO PS'
Aalto
Ribera del Duero

RP -
The 2010 Aalto was assembled and ready for bottling when I visited the winery. It is already showing great precision and focus on the nose with vanilla-tinged dark cherry and cassis fruit, followed by an undertow of candied orange peel.
The palate is already displaying wonderful balance, with supple, very fine tannins and a luscious, sweet candied finish that offers blood orange and tangerine-infused dark fruit.
There is a crisp theme of acidity to keep everything balanced. This is very promising.

'FLOR de PINGUS'
Domino de Pingus
Ribera del Duero

RP/Luis Gutierrez -
Even though it's young, this shows amazing perfume that should bloom with a year in bottle. This has all the signals to become one of the greatest vintages of Flor de Pingus. I already look forward to tasting this in my next round, after it has spent a year or more in bottle.

RIOJA RESERVA
Marques de Murrieta

RP/Luis Gutierrez -
The nose is subtle and very harmonious, with aromas of red cherries and some aromatic herbs. The palate is soft, it has a velvety texture with polished, round tannins, and there is a subtlety and harmony that  is Laudable.

    LA RIOJA ALTA
“La Rioja Alta was founded in the town of Haro in 1890. They own 450 hectares of vineyard from which their entire portfolio is sourced, predominantly Tempranillo complemented by Graciano, Mazuelo and Garnacha. Another tenet is their use of American rather than French oak. The wood is cured for two years outdoors before being shaped and hammered into barrels at their own cooperage. Quite simply, these are some of the finest Rioja's that can grace your cellar: complex, refined, classic but without compromising fruit intensity and to reiterate: wines that speak about where they come from.” Neal Martin, Wine Advocate #202, Aug 2012

TORRE DE ONA MARTELO
Rioja Reserva
La Rioja Alta

New Wine/Background:

This wine is from a single
2 hectare plot at their Torre de Ona estate in Rioja Alavesa.
La Rioja Alta have dedicated a considerable amount of time and money into perfecting the wine and this is the first vintage of Martelo that they have released.
They have spent 20 years identifying the best parcel of the estate –this is a true labour of love.

It is predominantly Tempranillo with small amounts of Mazuelo, Garnacha and Viura and spends 24 months in 80% American and 20% French oak barrels. It represents a departure to a slightly more modern style for this bastion of traditional winemaking. The results are brilliant and they see this as being one of their prestige wines in years to come.

'VIÑA ARANA GRAN RESERVA'
Rioja Gran Reserva
La Rioja Alta

RP/Luiz Gutierrez -
The
2012 was an unusual vintage in Rioja, as it was warm and dry, but the wines are fresher than those from 2011. The 2012 Viña Arana shows that character, as it's ripe and has concentration but is quite balanced. There are some creamy notes and plenty of underbrush, wet forest floor, spice and smoke, very recognizable as Rioja. It's clean, aromatic and open. Very pleasant and approachable, with enough grip to stand up to most foods. This is already a Gran Reserva.

'GRAN RESERVA 904'
Rioja Gran Reserva
La Rioja Alta

RP/Luiz Gutierrez -
It has the combination of elegance and power only the best vintages are capable of, with the classical aromas, great detail and nuance, very good balance and persistence. They consider 2010 among the best years of this century, and maybe future generations will talk about 2010 like we talk about the great classical vintages of yesterday today. The palate is polished but shows plenty of energy and tension, the tannins are very fine and elegant, and the flavours are focused and clean. This has to be one of the greatest wines from the vintage.

Rioja Reserva
Bodegas RODA

RP -
This is one of the warmest years for Roda, a ripe and heady, hedonistic vintage. What I like about the wine is that it does not display any signs of over ripeness, perhaps because of some cooler days in July that slowed things down. The nose is serious and without excess, with the oak also perfectly integrated into the fruit, which is in the foreground. The palate is also terribly balanced, with very fine tannins. This is very pleasant and tasty. This wine has a profile to be a great commercial success.

RODA I
Rioja Reserva
Bodegas RODA

RP -
The 2006 Roda I Reserva has a sultry bouquet with brambly black fruit, briar, and a touch of dried rose petal, all with fine delineation. The palate is tannic and masculine on the entry. It is well-defined with touches of dried blood and spice, the fruit opting to remain in the background and allowing intriguing spicy, savoury notes to dominate the middle and finish. It deserves another three of four years in bottle so that it can fully express itself.

RODA I
Rioja Reserva
Bodegas RODA

RP -
The 2004 vintage was a great one in Rioja (as it was in the rest of Spain). The 2004 Roda I Reserva is purple-coloured with an expressive, youthful bouquet of wood smoke, espresso, incense, tobacco, black cherry, and blackberry. Structured on the palate, it has enough ripe tannin to evolve for another 6-8 years. Sweetly fruited, it has superior depth and concentration, layered savoury flavours, and a lengthy, pure finish.
