Barbaresco
Marchesi di Barolo

Antonio Galloni -
Marchesi di Barolo's 2010 Barbaresco is a lovely wine with tons of early appeal. Crushed flowers, raspberries, spices and menthol all flesh out in the glass. This is an unusually open, pliant Barbaresco for the vintage. I am sure the 2010 will find many fans, as it is drinking beautifully today. It's great to see Marchesi doing such a terrific job with their entry-level wines.

Il Torrione Toscana
Petrolo

Antonio Galloni -
The 2009 Torrione impresses for its sensual inner perfume, silky tannins and gracious overall balance. Sweet red cherries, strawberry jam, crushed flowers, herbs and spices meld together in this tasty red. Torrione isn’t the great bargain it once was, but is still a great introduction to the wines of Petrolo. This medium-bodied, feminine Sangiovese-based red is best enjoyed over the next 5-7 years, while the fruit is vibrant.

Galatrona Toscana
Petrolo

Antonio Galloni -
Petrolo's 2007 Galatrona (Merlot) is another of the successes of the vintage. It is a dark, seamless Galatrona packed with dark fruit, cassis, minerals and French oak. Despite the wine's opulence and richness, the fruit retains considerable clarity as well as nuance. Today the French oak is a touch pronounced, but in a few years this dense, plush Merlot from impeccably-farmed hillside vineyards should be firing on all cylinders.

Brunello di Montalcino
Poggioi Il Castellare

Wine Spectator -
Dried dark fruit on the nose, verging on date and prune. Full-bodied, with a dense palate of ripe fruit and super silky tannins. This is a deep and beautiful red, delivering lots of subtle character. Fascinating.
One of the undiscovered treasures of the vintage.

    IL POGGIONE
This estate is on TOP Form!
This is what Antonio Galloni
had to say:
"
Readers who want to experience first-class Sangiovese from Montalcino won’t want to miss these exceptional wines. Winemaker Fabrizio Bindocci and his team have done an exceptional job for which they deserve all the praise in the world."

Brunello di Montalcino
Il Poggione

Antonio Galloni -
An utterly magnificent wine, the 2008 Brunello di Montalcino graces the palate with wild flowers, violets, rose petals and dark stone fruits. Today, the 2008 is quite brooding and closed in on itself, but the pedigree is obvious in the wine's layered, deeply expressive personality. The 2008 needs time, but there is little question it is a drop-dead gorgeous beauty. In 2008, Il Poggione decided against bottling their Riserva (even though that wine was magnificent from cask) so all of the best juice went into the straight bottling.

Vino Nobile di Montepulciano 'Asinone'
Poliziano

RP -
The 2001 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Asinone continues to be an exemplary single-vineyard offering, properly so as it was the first such bottling in the appellation in 1985. A full ruby in colour with an important, expansive nose of red and black berry fruit, leather, graphite, and vanilla, it offers powerful and focused flavours, full in their volume, elegant in their shape, and with an impeccable fusion of the fruit and oak.

Nebbiolo d'Alba Valmaggiore
Luciano Sandrone

Antonio Galloni -
The 2011 Langhe Nebbiolo Valmaggiore bursts out of the glass with layers of deep, expressive fruit. This is an especially rich, broad-shouldered Nebbiolo with fabulous depth, volume and tons of personality. The style is undoubtedly racy and big, but all the elements come together very nicely, even if some of the vineyard qualities of this site in Vezza d'Alba have been slightly baked out by the year. Still, there is an immediacy and a pure exuberance in the 2011 I find impossible not to love.

Nebbiolo d'Alba Valmaggiore
Luciano Sandrone

Antonio Galloni -
The 2010 Nebbiolo d'Alba Valmaggiore is surprisingly shut down today. The Valmaggiore is often open and accessible when young, but that is far from the case with the 2010. Firm yet well-integrated tannins frame red cherries, sweet herbs, menthol and spices in this surprisingly large-scaled, broad Valmaggiore. Layers of fruit continue to build to the vibrant, layered finish

     TENUTA dell'
ORNELLAIA
Lodovico Antinori built up one of the most successful and famous wineries in all of Italy in the hills near Bolgheri, next door to the estate of Sassicaia. The wines reflect the exceptional terroir of the region, complemented by the wonderful Mediterranean climate of coastal Tuscany.
We especially recommend their lovely early drinking wine: Le Volte and Le Serre Nuove at a fraction of the price.

Le Volte
Ornellaia

Antonio Galloni -
Sweet roses, raspberries, sage, tobacco, underbrush, cinnamon and new leather jump from the glass in the 2012 Le Volte dell'Ornellaia. This is an unusually fresh, vibrant Le Volte with gorgeous energy and focus. Le Volte is now done half in oak and half in concrete, which keeps the flavors lively and fresh. The blend is 50% Merlot, 30% Sangiovese and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon.

Le Volte
Ornellaia

Antonio Galloni -
The 2011 Le Volte dell'Ornellaia is juicy, expressive and radiant in this vintage. Sweet dark cherries, flowers, tobacco and mint all flesh out in a wine that impresses for its harmony and supple, gracious personality. At times Le Volte has been a bit different in style than the rest of the wines, here, but the 2011 is quite similar to the rest of the range. In 2011, Le Volte is 50% Merlot, 30% Sangiovese and 20% other grapes.

Ornellaia

Antonio Galloni -
The 2007 Ornellaia is a wine of texture above all else. What the 2007 lacks in aromatic intensity it more than makes up for with its sumptuous, generous personality. Silky and inviting, with soft contours and seemingly endless layers of dark red-fleshed fruit, the 2007 is absolutely delicious today.

Le Difese
Toscana IGT
Tenuta San Guido

Antonio Galloni
- The 2010 Le Difese shows most of its charms up-front. An initial burst of sweet red cherries tapers off rather quickly in this fragrant, floral entry-level red from Tenuta San Guido. Le Difese is 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Sangiovese.

Guidalberto
Toscana IGT
Tenuta San Guido

Antonio Galloni
- The 2009 Guidalberto flows across the palate with layers of radiant red fruit. This is another striking, supple Guidalberto loaded with personality. Stylistically it is quite close to the 2007, but with perhaps a touch less body but equally silky, polished tannins. Freshly cut roses, spices and a burst of pure red berries add nuance on the finish. This is easily one of the best vintages I can recall tasting. Guidalberto is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot.

Guidalberto
Toscana IGT
Tenuta San Guido

Antonio Galloni -
Tenuta San Guido's 2008 Guidalberto is a very pretty wine laced with mineral-infused dark fruit. This is a decidedly smaller scaled, lithe Guidalberto that impresses for its overall balance and finesse. The structure of the 2006 and the exuberance of the 2007 are missing, but the 2008 offers superb drinkability and pleasure today and over the next few years. Dried flowers, licorice and new leather add the final nuances of complexity on the finish.

Perlato del Bosco Rosso

Antonio Galloni -
The 2012 Perlato del Bosco brings together classic Sangiovese flavours with the breadth and power that are typical of the wines of Suvereto.
An exceptionally balanced and harmonious wine,
the 2012 is built on a core of deeply expressive fruit. Today, the flavours are naturally quite primary, but greater complexity will develop with further time in bottle

Perlato del Bosco Rosso

Antonio Galloni -
Dark raspberries, freshly cut flowers, tobacco and sweet spices all meld together in a gracious, perfumed wine. Supple, open and gracious, the 2010 Perlato del Bosco is a striking Maremma red to drink now and over the next few years. The purity of the fruit alone is striking, while the soft contours are hugely appealing as well. Sweet, perfumed notes ring out on the floral finish.

'Giusto di Notri'
Tua Rita

Antonio Galloni -
The estate’s 2006 Giusto di Notri is another weighty, powerful offering bursting with tons of primary fruit. Sweet herbs, cassis and graphite swirl around in the glass, adding further complexity. Like the other wines in this line-up, the Giusto di Notri needs time to reach the full range of its potential, but it is awfully impressive even at this early stage.
