BARBARESCO
Marchesi di Barolo
Antonio Galloni -
Marchesi di Barolo's
2010 Barbaresco is a lovely wine with tons of early appeal.
Crushed flowers, raspberries, spices and menthol all flesh
out in the glass. This is an unusually open, pliant Barbaresco
for the vintage. I am sure the 2010 will find many fans, as it
is drinking beautifully today. It's great to see Marchesi
doing such a terrific job with their entry-level wines. |

Il TORRIONE
Toscana
Petrolo
Antonio Galloni -
The 2009 Torrione
impresses for its sensual inner perfume, silky tannins and
gracious overall balance. Sweet red cherries, strawberry
jam, crushed flowers, herbs and spices meld together in this
tasty red. Torrione isn’t the great bargain it once was, but is
still a great introduction to the wines of Petrolo. This
medium-bodied, feminine Sangiovese-based red is best enjoyed
over the next 5-7 years, while the fruit is vibrant. |

GALATRONA
Petrolo
Antonio Galloni -
Ample and voluptuous on the palate, the 2015
Galatrona (Merlot) is terrific. Dark plum, licorice,
leather, tobacco, smoke and savoury herbs fill out the wine’s
frame effortlessly. At times quite powerful while in other
moments more restrained, the 2015 offers a super-appealing
push and pull of aromas, flavours and textures that is
compelling. The 2015 needs time to be at its best, but it is
a terrific example of the current style at Petrolo captured at
its very best. |

BRUNELLO di MONTALCINO
RISERVA VIGNA PAGANELLI
Il Poggione
RP -
The 2005 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Vigna Paganelli is a
phenomenal effort in this average vintage. I am amazed by
the estate's ability to make a wine with this level of textural
richness, depth and sheer power in 2005. This is a dark, inward
Brunello loaded with black fruit, smoke, tar, menthol and a host
of other dark, sensual aromas and flavours. The wine’s length
and intensity are truly a marvel to behold. |

Dried dark fruit on

Fascinating.

IL CARBONAIONE
Poggio Scalette
Antonio Galloni -
The 2014
Il Carbonaione is one of the truly exceptional wines of this
challenging season. Lithe and aromatic on the palate, with
fabulous energy and overall brightness, it stands out for its
superb balance. In many vintages, Il Carbonaione can be a
bit bombastic. The 2014, on the other hand, is all finesse.
Violet, lavender and cloves add shades of nuance to this bright,
beautifully persistent Carbonaione. The 2014 won't be at its
best for at least a few years, but its potential is evident. |

CHIANTI CLASSICO
Querciabella
Antonio Galloni -
The 2015 Chianti Classico, 100% Sangiovese, is
all class. The flavours are vibrant and lively, with plenty of
bright red cherry and strawberry character. This is an
especially understated, finessed wine for the year. The Chianti
Classico is a blend of approximately 40% Greve, 40% Gaiole and
20% Radda fruit. All the elements come together beautifully. |

NEBBIOLO d'ALBA VALMAGGIORE
Luciano Sandrone
Antonio Galloni -
The
2011 Langhe Nebbiolo Valmaggiore bursts out of the glass with
layers of deep, expressive fruit. This is an especially rich,
broad-shouldered Nebbiolo with fabulous depth, volume and tons
of personality. The style is undoubtedly racy and big, but
all the elements come together very nicely, even if some of the
vineyard qualities of this site in Vezza d'Alba have been
slightly baked out by the year. Still, there is an immediacy
and a pure exuberance in the 2011 I find impossible not to love. |

NEBBIOLO d'ALBA VALMAGGIORE
Luciano Sandrone
Antonio Galloni -
The
2010 Nebbiolo d'Alba Valmaggiore is surprisingly shut down
today. The Valmaggiore is often open and accessible when young,
but that is far from the case with the 2010. Firm yet
well-integrated tannins frame red cherries, sweet herbs, menthol
and spices in this surprisingly large-scaled, broad Valmaggiore.

TENUTA dell'
ORNELLAIA
Lodovico Antinori built up one of the most successful and famous
wineries in all of Italy in the hills near Bolgheri, next door
to the estate of Sassicaia. The wines reflect the exceptional
terroir of the region, complemented by the wonderful
Mediterranean climate of coastal Tuscany.
We especially recommend
their lovely early drinking wine: Le Volte
and Le Serre Nuove at a fraction of the price of the top
'Ornellaia' cuvve.

LE SERRE NUOVE dell'Ornellaia
Tenuta San Guido
RP/Monica
Larner -
This is a fantastic interpretation from Bolgheri.
The 2016 Bolgheri Rosso Le Serre Nuove dell'Ornellaia is made
with fruit from the same vineyard plots that go into the
Bolgheri Superiore, only this is a second selection if you will.
Generally speaking, fruit from the younger vines goes here. This
wine gives us a very pretty glimpse of what we can expect of the
high-end releases from this classic vintage. The fruit is
rock solid, delineated, tonic and firm. The pleasure factor
awarded here is very high thanks to the wine's inner softness,
silky tannins and soothing extract. The bouquet is seamless
and pristine. |

LE SERRE NUOVE dell'Ornellaia

Antonio
Galloni -
The 2015 Le Serre Nuove shows just how alluring
this vintage is. Silky, perfumed and also wonderfully light
on its feet, the 2015 is a real pleasure to taste today. All
of the Ornellaia signatures come through in an attractive,
mid-weight wine that will drink well right out of the gate.
The 2015 is a stunning Serre Nuove. That's all there is to it. |

Ornellaia
Antonio Galloni -
The 2007 Ornellaia
is a wine of texture above all else. What the 2007 lacks in
aromatic intensity it more than makes up for with its sumptuous,
generous personality. Silky and inviting, with soft contours
and seemingly endless layers of dark red-fleshed fruit, the 2007
is absolutely delicious today. |

SASSICAIA
Tenuta San Guido
RP/Monica
Larner -
The long-awaited 2015 Bolgheri Sassicaia represents a
tremendous effort that comes together with seamless precision
and focus. This is a confident and proud red wine from
Tuscany. Starting with the primary material at hand, you sense
the quality of fruit thanks to the wine's beautifully dark
appearance and the rich texture it offers to the palate. The
acidity is integrated, but more freshness still would have been
welcomed in my view (and would also contribute to its
longevity). The bouquet is amplified both in terms of volume and
length. Its playlist includes dark berry fruit, spice, leather,
licorice and roasted coffee bean. Yet, the mouthfeel is
extremely graceful and silky. The wine's undisputed pedigree
is showcased on the palate. |

SASSICAIA
Tenuta San Guido
RP/Monica
Larner -
The nose is redolent of bright fruit and blackberry. Spice, tar
and leather appear subtly at the back. The wine took on
considerable weight each year I came back to taste it and this
vintage was bottled earlier than average, precisely to give it
more time to unwind and relax in the small confines of the
bottle. This is a solid effort for sure and the wine is a
stunning example of what it takes to make great wine, even when
weather conditions are not in your favour. |

PERLATO del BOSCO Rosso

The 2012 Perlato del

breadth and power that are typical of the wines of Suvereto.
An exceptionally balanced and harmonious wine, the 2012 is

are naturally quite primary, but greater complexity will
develop with further time in bottle |

The estate’s 2006
Giusto di Notri is another weighty, powerful offering
bursting with tons of primary fruit. Sweet herbs, cassis and

awfully impressive even at this early stage. |
